Taichung Green Museumbrary
A New Type of Integrated Cultural Venue
The Taichung Green Museumbrary is located on the north side of Central Park. The architecture was designed by SANAA, the architecture firm founded by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, in collaboration with Ricky Liu & Associates Architects+Planners. It serves as an integrated cultural venue that combines the Taichung Art Museum and the Taichung Public Library. The construction broke ground in 2019, with the official opening planned for the end of 2025.
A Site Created for People
The Green Museumbrary consists of eight interconnected architectural volumes arranged in a staggered formation. Its façade features glass curtain walls, painted steel panels, and expanded aluminum mesh, fully utilizing the qualities of these materials to highlight spatial fluidity and visual transparency. Focusing on “flow” and “transparency,” the design allows natural light and the lush greenery of the surrounding park to penetrate the interior gently. Meanwhile, shadows cast by visitors inside are transformed into dynamically vibrant colors by the building’s thin, film-like outer shell. Through the use of architectural materials, the design encourages a mutual reflection between interior and exterior spaces, as well as between people and the environment. As architect Ryue Nishizawa states, “We aim to enrich interactions between the park and the building, and between the park and interior spaces, through diverse forms. We also seek to meaningfully integrate the unique functions of the art museum with those of the library.”
For the Architectural Team
The Green Museumbrary not only combines the library and the art museum but also introduces new ways for interaction among the building, the park environment, and all visitors. Architect Kazuyo Sejima states that “Our goal has always been to design architecture that encourages widespread participation and is open to the surroundings. Whether through visual aesthetic education or literary learning at the library, the Green Museumbrary merges these aspects into a versatile learning environment. To me, this is a major feature of the building. We have reflected on how to gently connect these two spaces to create ‘a place created for people,’ where learning and communication are integrated through architecture.”
A Space Connecting Knowledge and Perception
In addition to providing hardware facilities and spatial planning, the Green Museumbrary as an integrated cultural venue aims to actively promote the dissemination of knowledge, perception, and art, addressing various issues to meet the needs of contemporary culture. It also offers a diverse range of public programs and exhibitions. The goal is to create more diversifed and innovative connections and opportunities for Taichung, its residents, and the environment, establishing a model of an inclusive cultural space with boundless possibilities.
